Folklore

Paul Bunyan
Was a mythical lumberjack; subject of tall tales throughout timber country from Michigan westward. It was said that he dug the Grand Canyon by draging his axe.

John Henry
Originating about 1870. He was a hero of a popular African American folk ballad. He was said to have drilled through more rock than a steam-powered drill but died with his hammer in his hand.

Uncle Sam
Personification of U.S. and its people; origin uncertain; may be based on inspector of government supplies in Revolutionary War and War of 1812.
